Pius Sprenger, Ph.D., our chief financial officer, has over 20 years of experience across Europe and the U.S. building businesses, risk-managing and leading the turnaround of entire divisions of leading international banks while holding a variety of executive management roles in Frankfurt, London and New York.
Until recently, Dr. Sprenger was on the Executive Committee of Cantor Fitzgerald’s investment bank in New York. Previously, he worked at Deutsche Bank for 14 years in London and New York where he held various senior positions. As Global Head of the Non-Core Operations Unit, he initiated and led the largest work-out in Deutsche Bank’s history. During his tenure, Dr. Sprenger managed various operating companies across multiple industries and executed the sale of over €140 billion of assets, derivatives and companies years ahead of schedule.
In this role, Dr. Sprenger led the sale of multiple operating companies in Europe and the U.S., such as The Cosmopolitan hotel and casino in Las Vegas, the Maher Terminals in New Jersey, a commercial real estate platform in London and New York, and an automotive parts retail chain in Germany. Further, Dr. Sprenger was instrumental in navigating highly scrutinized diligence, counterparty sourcing, negotiations and transaction execution processes. Prior to running this division, he ran the Global Securitized Products Group, a meaningful business line of Deutsche Bank. Before his time at Deutsche Bank, he worked at Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley. Dr. Sprenger also has a record of working closely with the German, U.K. and U.S. regulators.
Over the years, Dr. Sprenger has acted as a trusted advisor and an experienced angel investor in technology companies. He is a seed angel investor and advisory board member of one of Europe’s leading cryptocurrency trading platforms, Bitpanda, which closed Europe’s largest Series A funding round in 2020. He is a former member of both the Board of Port Elizabeth, a container terminal operator in New Jersey, and the Supervisory Board of Sal. Oppenheim, a former German private bank, in Cologne, Germany.
Dr. Sprenger has a diploma in Mathematics from the University of Konstanz and earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Hanover. He is a scholar of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
